Diego Voci; Pferde auf Weide; 61x108cm oil on canvas, signed “Voci”

This is only the 4th “VOCI” discovered so far from the era of Diego’s connection to the Schlossgalerie (who served a wealthy horse owner clientele) in Zurich advertised as “Antonio Voci”, 1962-1965. It is the first that DVP could acquire for the day a generous benefactor is willing to finance a major Diego Museum Exhibition.

In his early career internationally collected artist Antonio Innocenzo Voci (1920-1985) signed his works some form of VOCI (VOH-chee).  He was known his nickname by “Diego”. About 1966 he began using the “Diego” signature through 1985.

Here are the 3 other examples of “VOCI” paintings:

EARLY DIEGO VOCI DISCOVERY UNVEILED!

Antonio Voci signature A Voci Blacksmith painting

Here is one of 3 paintings known to be sold by Schlossgalerie in Zurich, Switzerland; a period when Schlossgalerie in Zurich provided Diego (Voci) a studio (mid 1963-1964) where master paintings were created.

Mr. Buri owner of Schlossgalerie in Zurich during that time period sold Diego’s works under the name “Antonio Voci”.

This painting of a blacksmith was discovered by Susan Vogler Pinfold.  Susan sent this image to the Diego Voci Project and is referenced as “The Smithy” 57 ½” x 69″ oil on canvas.  This painting is signed “A Voci” and on the plaque the name is “Antonio Voci“.

Signature “Voci” early works 1960’s by Diego Voci.

The signature “Voci” is rare as most of the Diego’s works before 1965 (signed A.Voci). (see image above).  The “Diego” signature was signed for a 20 year period (1965-1985).  Historically, this painting is considered a prominent work of art as it was during a time period in Diego’s life when he painted at Schlossgalerie in Zurich, Switzerland.

This #Voci painting was first discovered on Artifact Collectors back in May 12, 2014. http://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-voci-painting-of-the-week-april-22-2013-6491218.html#78216.  It was posted under the name “Nadja”.  We have tried to contact without result.
This is an example of a work of art The Diego Voci Project would like to have in our Major Museum Exhibition (generous benefactor needed).

WHERE IS THE OWNER TODAY OF THIS ANTONIO VOCI?

In January 1965, DIEGO had an exhibition at the Schlossgalerie in #Zurich, #Switzerland.

Notice the reference to the name in the “Neue Züricher Zeitung” newspaper ad “Antonio Voci” not “DIEGO”.

Helga Drössler had been with DIEGO for five years. Thereafter he mostly signed“DIEGO”. Helga and DIEGO married in #Denmark in 1968.

Notice the style. #Realism. Both different from the works DIEGO Collectors are familiar with. It illustrates his #versatility and #craftsmanship (#Picasso painted realism when he first began. So did #Dali).

Schlossgalerie in #Zurich, #Switzerland confirmed Antonio (#Diego) Voci’s Talents as an #Artist!

“HELGA and DIEGO” by Helga Voci

CHAPTER 4   Schloßgalerie and Switzerland

“Diego had to stay in Marrakech until August, so I decided to take a job in a travel agency in Lugano, Switzerland. This gave me the possibility to work and also to improve my Italian. I was already able to speak, but I didn’t know the grammar, so I took private lessons. Finally in August 1962 Diego joined me in Lugano.

In Switzerland it was for the first time, where Diego was seriously looking for galleries. He went to Geneva, Bern, and also to Zurich. In Zurich he found the Schloßgalerie where the owner was very interested in showing his work. So Diego decided to stay for some time in Switzerland. We rented a boathouse at the lake of Constance close to Zurich and Diego painted. The gallery owner sold quite many paintings; but unfortunately I don`t know the names of the customers and which paintings were sold.

At that time we never took pictures of the paintings, which is a pity. I feel very sorry, but I was young.

I had no experience and Diego did not care. If I could go back 50 years, I would do many things completely different. We stayed in Zurich until June 1963.

During this period Diego went also several times to Aviano, Italy, the American base. He would do caricatures there. At that time a painting was sold and brought to President John F. Kennedy, who was visiting Wiesbaden. (I don`t remember what it looked like).

In Italy, we stayed for some time in Milan, Florence, and Rome. Finally we came to a small medieval town in northern Italy, called Asolo with only 1000 inhabitants. We rented an apartment in a very old house in the middle of the town with a big terrace and Diego made his first real Studio. He mostly sold in Zurich in the Schloßgalerie. But he also worked with a gallery in Milan “Globart Kunstgalerie.””

THE #DIEGO NAME #MYSTERY

How and when did Antonio Innocenzo Voci (No Diego), born August 10, 1920 in the small village of Gasperina, Italy become known as “Diego”?

Friends and family called him “TOTO” in his years of youth (No Diego).

Diego (Toto) Reincarnated NEW YORKER CARTOON 22 JAN 2015

Somewhere from “TOTO” there was a change to “Diego” even though he would not sign his art “Diego” until 1965.  Early works of art were signed some form of VOCI.  As late as 1965, his works were advertised by Schloßgalerie, #Zürich, as Antonio Voci (Not Diego).  He signed “A. Voci”.

Alt and Jung ZURICH News Ad 600 dpi

Yet much earlier he was called “Diego.”  How & when is unknown.  Anthony “Tony” Voci in 1957 (son of Diego’s older brother Vincenzo) toured Europe with “Diego”.  Tony said in an interview;

“Every town we drove thru, Diego would say we need to stop for an espresso and cigarette”…. When Diego would walk into the restaurants, the owners would welcome him as “Diego”.”

Diego signed “D. Voci 1957” on the gifts he drew for Tony during the same travels.

In 1960 the famous sculptor Gigi #Guadagnucci used the name “Diego” to introduce him to Helga at the Les Deux Magots café in Paris.  Helga knew her husband-to-be as “Diego” for their 25 years together.

He first signed his work “Diego” in 1965 when Joy Gibson, the Canadian art dealer began representing his work.

In 1970, he signed a contract with Dr. Jawdat Naffouj, as “Antonio Diego.”

In 1974, he signed a contract with Cooprider signing “Diego Voci”.

1976 was the first time he offered his name as Antonio “Diego” Voci on an official government document.  It was with the town of Taunusstein for a residence permit required to buy the house / studio where Diego & Helga lived together until his death in 1985.  Helga maintains the same address.

So again, the big question is: how and when did “Toto” become “Diego”?  Can you help?

MOTHER’S PORTRAIT BY DIEGO AND NEW GENERATION

Mother's Portrait 003

This painting signed “D. Voci 1964” is an important historical find.  Why?

It fills a gap.  We have images of 2 watercolors Diego did as a gift to his nephew Tony signed D. Voci 1957 when they traveled Europe together.  We have the larger realism “Alt und Yung” signed “A.Voci” when Schlossgalerie, Zurich provided Diego a studio for R. Buri’s wealthy clients.  All three are represented in the Wikipedia biography Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci

Where were Helga and Diego living in 1964?  Helga wrote:

We came to a small medieval town in northern Italy, called Asolo with only 1000 inhabitants. We rented an apartment in a very old house in the middle of the town with a big terrace and Diego made his first real Studio. He mostly sold in Zurich in the Schloßgalerie.”

The “Diego” signature began in 1965 with Joy Gibson, a Canadian art dealer.  That signature would dominate all others for the next 20 years.

Mike Kennedy is part of the “New Generation” of “Diego” collectors through the inheritance of his mother’s portrait.  Mike reached us through diegovoci.com and we requested additional information.  We await with eagerness the photos of his family and Diego.
