“VOCI” VS. “DIEGO” SIGNATURE

Even though called “Diego“, until 1965 he signed his works of art some form of “Voci“. See signature gallery below and on Antonio Diego Voci Wikipedia:

From 1962 thru 1965 Diego was represented at the prestigious Schlossgalerie (see below) and an image of a 1965 ad from a Zurich newspaper. He began signing “Diego” in 1966.

DIEGO (VOCI) IN THIS STUDIO

A glimpse into the day to day as Diego worked in his studio:

Words from DIEGO VOCI:

I paint for pleasure… I like to work.” https://www.artifactcollectors.com/the-story-of-diego-voci-part-1-563.html

“The first idea … the first few lines decide the whole work.”

I must to paint. To me is important the white canvas. On the canvas I can begin again. This is my life.”

Helga Voci, widow of Diego Voci shares her words:

“It was late 1960, DIEGO was living in a small Hotel near the Seine, he did not really work, just a few sketches from time to time and I was wondering how he was financing his living. He made a big secret about his finances.”

During this time period in 1960, Diego signed his works “Voci“.  At the time, he never foresaw later having a 20 year career signing “Diego”.

#RARE TO #FIND!

Diego Caricature for L Italian Show Sextet (517x800)

Diego Voci; Italian Poster was for Theater in #Italy  (shared by Mario Voci, Diego’s Nephew)

It would be extremely rare to find a signed #caricature by internationally collected artist Antonio “Diego” Voci, even though, he did thousands. And if he did sign, it would be some form of Voci through 1965.

Caricatures were a source of Diego’s quick money in his early years. Diego was known to complete 20 drawings in one sitting of only a couple of hours. Helga Voci, (Diego’s widow) was his constant companion for 25 years (1960 until his death in 1985).
Helga notes Diego’s caricature experience in her biography “Sometime later I found out that DIEGO was doing caricatures in American Officers Clubs in #France, #Germany and later on also in #London and #Spain. He did wonderful caricatures, it took him only a few minutes to do each one and people were crazy about them, they stood in line waiting for their turn. He made a lot of money with this” https://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-history-4330818/Page2.html#43754

Diego Voci; Pferde auf Weide; 61x108cm oil on canvas, signed “Voci”

This is only the 4th “VOCI” discovered so far from the era of Diego’s connection to the Schlossgalerie (who served a wealthy horse owner clientele) in Zurich advertised as “Antonio Voci”, 1962-1965. It is the first that DVP could acquire for the day a generous benefactor is willing to finance a major Diego Museum Exhibition.

In his early career internationally collected artist Antonio Innocenzo Voci (1920-1985) signed his works some form of VOCI (VOH-chee).  He was known his nickname by “Diego”. About 1966 he began using the “Diego” signature through 1985.

Here are the 3 other examples of “VOCI” paintings:
