“Scene Espagnole” was purchased through Diego’s home in June of 1976.
“During our tour in #Europe we spent many wonderful #vacations and traveled throughout #Spain. It was during these vacation trips we came to appreciate the vibrant #culture and #beauty of the #Spanish people. When we saw the painting “Scene Espagnole” we understood immediately that it reflected our own feelings of the beauty of #Spain.
Diego’s ability to articulate the #life of people through his #art is unparalleled.
We not only have our own memories of Spain, we appreciate a constant visual reminder of these memories through this #painting and Diego’s art. It was 1976 during our final visit to #Diego’s home in #Schwetzingen we instantly developed a deep appreciation for “Scene Espagnole”. We had by this time, in preparation for our repatriation, converted all of our funds to #Canadian #Dollars and transferred our finances to #Edmonton. Diego’s extraordinary insight and sensitivity focused like a laser beam on our situation and our attraction to this painting. Understanding this, Diego gave us the painting without deposit, simply on our promise we would pay for it on our return to #Canada.
When a few years later I had the opportunity to discuss his trust in me with this painting, I asked Diego what he would do if I hadn’t paid him as I promised, to which he immediately replied, in his playful good natured way “I would have come to Canada and killed you”.

“In 1975, we visited Diego and Helga at their home to meet with Diego and consider purchasing additional #paintings.
Diego and Helga were living in #Schwetzingen, #Germany at the time. Diego’s home housed art in so many #mediums and #forms, the visit was enchanting and we appreciated an enjoyable afternoon with Diego and Helga and a great bottle of #wine. On that visit we purchased the “Madchen Mit Tuch” and while there, we noticed an uncompleted painting, on an #easel in Diego’s #studio which was to become Suonatrice di Linto (February 1975).
Wendy and I instantly became entranced with the unfinished work and developed an unshakable bond with the painting, we needed to have it. We were able to convince Diego to complete the painting for us. This was truly a privilege to have witnessed the creation and completion of this painting which we enjoy as a masterpiece today.”

One third of my 76 years were spent with the love of my life, artist DIEGOVOCI™ (1920-1985).
That is me above in 1970 where this chapter of my life with DIEGO begins.
“Diego was preparing an art show in Ravenna, Italy which was organized by Galleria Cairoli from October 30th to November 10th in 1970. We had a beautiful season, Italian lifestyle, sunshine, beach, and good Italian food. After this exhibit we moved back to Germany in December of that year.
My parents were then building a house in Bavaria. Diego was drawing the plans and helped with the interior decoration. So we rented an apartment there from December 1970 until June 1972. At that time Diego still sent paintings to Naffouj, but he was not so happy anymore with the agreement, so we stopped and started doing the business ourselves.
For several years we worked together with Liliane Dussard, a French lady who had been working in Naffouj Gallery before and later on. I think in 1974 or 75 Christine Khan took over. I am still in contact with Christine.
In the meantime we moved from Bavaria to Schwetzingen near Heidelberg. There we had a little daughter, Alessandra (you can view a portrait Diego made of her in of the previous post). In 1976 we moved to Taunusstein near Wiesbaden, where we bought a house and where Diego lived and worked until his death in 1985. This house is where I still live today.
During that time, in 1973, we made our first trip to the United States. We bought a car in New York and we drove across the U.S. from N.Y. to San Francisco. We went to places like New Orleans and Albuquerque. We visited several Indian pueblos, where Diego started to make sketches of the Indians, because he thought they had very interesting faces.”

“1970-1976”
