A TWO-FOLD MYSTERY PAINTING FROM THE MASTER OF SURREAL!

Diego Voci Painting

Diego Voci; Unknown Title; oil on canvas, signed “Diego”

We know nothing about this painting by the internationally collected artist Antonio Diego Voci (VOH-chee 1920-1985). Not its size. Not is age. Not its whereabouts. All we have is a scanned image from a single sheet of glossy professional print paper. Logically it was for a printing project.

We reached out to Helga Voci, widow of Diego Voci, and she does not recall the specifics of this particular Diego Voci painting.

The two-fold mystery is the missing painting and the mystery within the painting itself.

The juxtaposition of “objects, shapes and figures” creates imagery that holds several stories within. Significance of the “Dove” in Diego’s works, what did this represent? “The spirit of child” often was a focal point for Diego; just as Alessandra, Diego’s daughter was the center of his love.

$20,000 REWARD for this stolen masterwork by internationally collected artist Antonio DIEGO VOCI (VOH-chee) 1920-1985!

In 1973 Dr. Ogden Brown, an addicted Diego Voci collector, obtained the phenomenal “NUDE IN YELLOW” 48″ x 36″ directly from Diego Voci.  About 1974, this marvelous painting strangely disappeared in a move of the Brown family from one home to another in Colorado. They saw “NUDE IN YELLOW” go into the moving truck. The painting was missing when the truck was unloaded and hasn’t been seen since.

Interpretation of “Donne Con Natura Morta”

Over 30 years ago, the art collector who purchased this painting “Donne Con Natura Morta” at a #DiegoVoci™ (VOH-chee) art exhibition in Sembach, #Germany re-titled it “Three Sisters” and believed the gold object at the bottom right was a block of #cheese.  DiegoVoci™ had a deeper meaning awaiting discovery by the viewer.  …Contemplate #death through the metaphor of a golden #fortune #cookie.

“Donne Con Natura Morta”, 1978, 31 ½ x 23 2/3

The word “Morta” is #Italian, literally translated is “Death”.  However, it reverses meaning when the word “Natura” is added to “Morta” as in Natura  Morta”; translated to English is Still Life”.

The trio of women are one.  As DiegoVoci™ contemplated death in this painting; the fortune #cookie is the only “still life” object that unfolds his interpretation of one’s transition.  DiegoVoci™ communicates the natural course of death as one receives a message from the “fortune cookie”.  The #foreshadow of the physical form is interpreted as “lifeless” while the mind exudes a presence of life swayed by the uncertainty one’s experiences with thoughts of #transition.

The foundation of the true meaning in his creation lies in the shadows of the #spirit representing a bold apparent & non-apparent emotion of life.  Is our life simply a mystery wrapped up in a fortune cookie?

THE #DIEGO NAME #MYSTERY

How and when did Antonio Innocenzo Voci (No Diego), born August 10, 1920 in the small village of Gasperina, Italy become known as “Diego”?

Friends and family called him “TOTO” in his years of youth (No Diego).

Somewhere from “TOTO” there was a change to “Diego” even though he would not sign his art “Diego” until 1965.  Early works of art were signed some form of VOCI.  As late as 1965, his works were advertised by Schloßgalerie, #Zürich, as Antonio Voci (Not Diego).  He signed “A. Voci”.

Yet much earlier he was called “Diego.”  How & when is unknown.  Anthony “Tony” Voci in 1957 (son of Diego’s older brother Vincenzo) toured Europe with “Diego”.  Tony said in an interview;

“Every town we drove thru, Diego would say we need to stop for an espresso and cigarette”…. When Diego would walk into the restaurants, the owners would welcome him as “Diego”.”

Diego signed “D. Voci 1957” on the gifts he drew for Tony during the same travels.

In 1960 the famous sculptor Gigi #Guadagnucci used the name “Diego” to introduce him to Helga at the Les Deux Magots café in Paris.  Helga knew her husband-to-be as “Diego” for their 25 years together.

He first signed his work “Diego” in 1965 when Joy Gibson, the Canadian art dealer began representing his work.

In 1970, he signed a contract with Dr. Jawdat Naffouj, as “Antonio Diego.”

In 1974, he signed a contract with Cooprider signing “Diego Voci”.

1976 was the first time he offered his name as Antonio “Diego” Voci on an official government document.  It was with the town of Taunusstein for a residence permit required to buy the house / studio where Diego & Helga lived together until his death in 1985.  Helga maintains the same address.

So again, the big question is: how and when did “Toto” become “Diego”?  Can you help?
