Helga Voci, widow of Diego Voci 1920-1985, speaks of her experience of her late husband. #Diego liked to be “Seen” and “Be Seen” at the finest of places… all money made from his art.
“I must say at that time I had met many artists who were quite poor, they were all seriously working, they mostly had small ateliers, no comfort, happy when they sold a painting, and then invited the others. And when they didn`t sell – just eating bread and black coffee. Nobody had a car, in fact DIEGO was called: “el pintor con coche” (which means- the painter with a car) . So, when I heard DIEGO inviting me in his car I thought: this man is showing off, besides the car he was very well dressed, like a businessman.”

This exceptional caricature artist is generously rewarded by New Yorker Magazine for making President Trump look foolish; talented art that effectively reflects the magazine’s political bias. The extreme can become a turn-off too many.
Although Diego avoided politics, his caricatures were exceptional.
Diego used caricature art not only to get quick money, but moreover to study people’s faces that would eventually appear by brush and paint on canvas.*

“When you need money, I go paint some”, common words from Diego to Helga. Helga Voci, widow of Diego Voci, shares some moments of Diego.
“Diego did not get so much excited when he sold a painting, he knew he needed the money to pay the bills, but money did not really interest him, he wanted a good life, nice Restaurants, Holidays, good Hotels, pay his bills, the house, etc. but he never was interested to save money, he did not care, as long as I [Helga] had a comfortable life and Alessandra [daughter] had everything she needed, everything was fine.”
The truth is if Diego could look down and see today;
The only things left for his widow and daughter at his death in 1985 were “some paintings and debts”. Helga at 78 with a daughter with Crohn’s Disease, is still working as a framer of other peoples’ art to meet expenses…
…THEREFORE, Helga is now offering the one piece dear to her heart she said she would never sell; The self portrait of Diego.
