In 2018, 20 most expensive lots showed a healthy market that continued to churn out new records for major artists, despite many top lots selling on just a few bids or less. Collectors fought over paintings, furniture, and ephemera from the collection of Peggy and David #Rockefeller, which racked up $832.6 million in sales—the most for an #estate in #history. #Asian collectors continued to muscle their way into the top echelon of the auction #world, both by securing major works at sales in New York and by buying big lots during sales in #HongKong and #Beijing.

“LA #LETTURA” – LADIES #READING by Antonio DIEGO Voci

La Lettura #571-689 Feldmann 1977 60x70cm

Diego Voci; “La Lettura”,  #571-689, oil on canvas, 70x60cm

Diego Voci (VOH-chee 1920-1985) captured the most out of his #muses, not only the faces of people he met but the culture and everyday life. In this painting, you see ladies “reading” and relating. Diego, who is the “Artist of Thousand Faces”, absorbed the different cultures he traveled to.

The elongated neck… #Modigliani was the first artist to create this diversion in figurative art. The elongated neck became an embodiment of character adding to Diego’s creation of faces.

Where is this painting now? And the original owner? Mr. Feldmann from Maryland (who originally purchased this painting back in 1977).

#DIEGO VOCI FINAL ONE-MAN SHOW, DIED 43 DAYS LATER

It is well known in art history that Amadeo #Modigliani in his lifetime (1884-1920) had only one gallery solo exhibition, which was shut down by the police the first day. According to one source, #Modigliani painted 354 oil paintings before he early death.  He died poor.  The last sale of a #Modigliani this month (May 2018) sold for $157 million.

#VanGogh painted, by one estimate, 900 oil paintings and never had a gallery solo exhibition and sold only one painting in his self-chosen-short-lifetime (1853-1890).  He died poor. The last #VanGogh sold for $81 million at Christie’s in November 2017.  In 1990, a #VanGogh went for $130 million.

Internationally collected artist Antonio #Diego Voci was born the year #Modigliani died  (1920-1985), #Diego Voci had several one-man exhibitions, painted about 4,000 oil paintings in his lifetime and sold most of them to collectors from all over the world.  “The Diego Voci Project” has been searching since 2009 to find them and catalog them for historical purposes.  Link: https://www.diegovociproject.com/

Here is the newspaper write-up in Germany about #Diego’s final exhibition.  He died of lung cancer 43 days later on August 10, 1985.

Modigliani Nu Couche

Amedeo Modigliani, Nu couché (sur le côté gauche) (1917)

At Sotheby’s, the top lot of the night (May 14, 2018) —and one of the most buzzed-about this season—was Amedeo Modigliani‘s large nude Nu couché (sur le côté gauche) (1917), which carried a $150 million estimate, the most expensive ever placed on a single work at auction. It also had an irrevocable, or third-party, bid placed in advance. The work sold for a premium-inclusive price of $157 million after sparse bidding.

“Modigliani has now joined the ultimate club within the art market at $150 million,” he said at a post-sale press conference. “He’s the only artist who has broken that ceiling twice.”

The Modigliani canvas is part of a prized series of nude paintings, produced between 1916 and 1919, that caused a scandal when they were first shown in Paris. When exhibited in  Berthe Weill’s gallery for what would be the only one-man exhibition that Modigliani during his lifetime, a sizable crowd outside raised the curiosity of the police, who shut down the show after two days. (Only two drawings sold.)

FRUSTRATED VAN GOGH COULDN’T SELL ANYTHING

#VanGogh artistic talent was among the all-time best.  But, it didn’t sell until many years after his #death; and now Van Gogh’s works bring in multi-millions worldwide.

Van Gogh

As noted in the Wikipedia biography (see below) of internationally collected artist Antonio Diego Voci (1920-85), he was motivated not to live the cash-strapped lives of Van Gogh and Modigliani and lived the good life solely from the buyers of his art.

“Diego thrived on camaraderie, as did other artists before him, such as Amedeo Modigliani, both “figurative” artists, both Italian born, both migrated to Paris.  Among Diego’s many facets was a drive never to be poor, never to live a tormented drug ridden life of Amedeo Modigliani who at age 35 “died in Paris exacerbated by poverty only one exhibition to his credit.” or the tortured life of Vincent van Gogh who died at age 37, with only one painting purchased in his lifetime. Diego greatly admired the exceptional work of both artists, but, unlike both artists who found few buyers for their work, in their lifetime, Diego did for his.”

Modigliani was one of the modern master painters who inspired Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985) “Artist of a Thousand Faces”.

In an overheated art market where anything seems possible, a painting of an outstretched nude woman by the early-20th-century artist Amedeo Modigliani sold on Monday night for $170.4 million with fees to Liu Yiqian, a former taxi driver turned billionaire art collector, in a packed sales room at Christie’s. It was the second-highest price paid for an artwork at auction.

The painting became the 10th work of art to reach nine figures under the hammer. The bidding was palpably tense, with six people vying for the lot, and it took nine minutes to sell, with the winning bid coming from the phone. Mr. Liu, who with his wife Wang Wei is among China’s most visible art collectors, confirmed on Tuesday that he is the buyer. He said he planned to bring the work back to Shanghai, where he and his wife have two private museums.

Modigliani nudes are regarded as among the ultimate trophy paintings of the 20th century.

About the $42 million Modigliani:

“There were plenty of big-ticket lots peppered throughout the evening, highlighted in large part by Amedeo Modigliani’s beautiful and almost prim seated portrait “Paulette Jourdain,” from circa 1919, which sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for the top lot price of $42,810,000 (est. upon request in excess of $25 million). The unidentified, silver-haired under bidder sat in the fourth row of the salesroom, wedged between two blonde companions and sipping white wine during the bidding. The pony-tailed sitter in the painting was the maid and later companion/lover of Leopold Zborowski, Modigliani’s Paris dealer. The work was last exhibited in “Modigliani and His Models” at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 2006. It was one of Modigliani’s last portraits before his death in 1920 and #Taubman acquired the work from the Acquavella Galleries in 1983, the same year he acquired Sotheby’s with the help of several private investors, including Henry Ford II.”
