Artist Diego Voci was a Man of the People

Helga Voci, Diego’s lover, wife and confidant from 1960 until his death from lung cancer (chain smoker), wrote in her biography, her memory;

“Diego played cards with the Fishermen”

Here is an example of Diego’s memory of 3 Fisherman we found in an old faded Polaroid from 1974.

THE #NOTORIETY CONTINUES FOR #ARTIST #DiegoVoci™

Content below is from page 7 of the 8 page #1974 Diego Catalog by Coop Cooprider, #DiegoVoci™#Historian.

Commentary John Krueger Writer for Stars & Stripes Part II:

“Another character that often reoccurs in DIEGO’s portraits is the #clown – earnest, ruddy peasant faces under the #white makeup and the #red rose, true #children of “LA COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE”.

The memory of the classic form, always present in the subconscious of this truly modern #artist, gives a higher meaning and a more complex form to the work of DIEGO.  His groups of figures – here again he favors young voluptuous women – produce an almost three #dimensional effect, which is achieved by a competent use of the laws of perspective rather than by optical tricks, as, in the case of the #cubist #paintings.

Episodes and intellectual adventures, which may at times attract great curiosity and interest among public and critics, bear very little resemblance to the fundamental values of art.  Too many collective and individual phenomena dismay and disappoint art lovers looking at modern art today.  Still, there are some artists who, unaffected by trends and passing fashions, dedicate themselves to the search for truth and beauty.  DIEGO is such a man.”

Content below is from page 5 of 8, 1974 Diego Catalog by Coop Cooprider, #DiegoVoci™#Historian.

A witty, gracious, confident man, DIEGO does not hunger for success.  He tells those who wish to exploit him, “You want to make me something in the sky with wings…go ahead.  You want to make me famous… go ahead.  But this is not my life.”

 “A man look at woman…this is cerebral feeling.  Venus is love god… who made her?  In reality Venus never existed.  I like for example fat woman… that’s the way I build Venus.  Or I like skinny woman… that’s the way I build Venus.  If I am important enough, that’s enough to influence 90% of the world.” – DIEGO, 1974

Content in excerpt is from page 3 of 8 of the 1974 Diego Catalog by Coop Cooprider, #DiegoVoci™Historian And the interview continues by journalist Victoria Williams in #Germany:

“Although dates and facts mean little to DIEGO, a man who lives…

… for each day, the introduction in #Paris in January 1960 to Helga Drössler was a significant turning point in DIEGO’s life.

“My life took on a new meaning. I became more.”

Helga is DIEGO’s wife.

During DIEGO’s extensive travels he was always #painting, always #learning …

“to fill a need … to express.”

POTENTIAL #DIEGOVOCI MODEL – KICKING HERSELF

Cheryl McCarra Fairchild and her husband Dan were stationed in Germany from 1974-1977 in the Karlsruhe area. Cheryl remembered to Kami (Diego Voci Project):

“I met Diego for the first time at an OWC (Officer’s Wives Club Luncheon).  I fell in love with Diego’s work and his personality. I wanted to buy an oil painting.  On a Lieutenant’s salary we eventually settled for 3 Diego lithographs which we bought over time from Lillian Dussard.”

“When our family retired to the US in Georgia years later, I started searching online for DIEGO paintings. I found our first oil painting: “Giovene Ragazza”.  The profile reminded me of my mother”.

Diego’s vibrant and bright colors in the scarves almost contradict the calm serene and fine features of her eyes and lips.

Cheryl recalls;

“Diego actually asked me to model for him.  At the time I had two small children and saw no way to do that. I’m kicking myself now!”

Though Helga Voci, Diego’s widow, states;

“Diego rarely used models, Diego painted from memory.”

Helga was referring to studio models.  Evidence is frequent that out of the studio face to face in the moment, a face of a woman or man, young or old, would inspire Diego.  Example: http://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-voci-painting-of-the-week-5154118/Page9.html#91027; an interesting story of a black beauty with intriguing eyes.

And stay tuned for more exciting news from the Fairchild’s and the “New Generation”.
