4 DIEGO VOCI TREASURES FOUND AT ESTATE SALE – NUMBER 1

When was the last time you went to a 2nd hand store, antique store, or even an Estate Auction? Tom in South Dakota went to an Estate Auction and found not just one oil painting by Antonio DIEGO Voci (1920-1985) but a total of 4 oil paintings by the internationally collected artist, mostly known as “DIEGO” to all who have been lucky enough to meet him during his short lifetime. Meet the 1st of the 4: “FISCHER”FISCHER for POST w Title et al 6 APR 2018When Tom first saw “Fischer” come up for auction – he was taken by the rugged and well-lived look!  Diego was raised in Gasperina a small town in the southern region of Calabria, Italy. Diego loved people and proved this having lived his life loving people of all kind, ages, professions – as long as there was a passion of some kind. And,  Diego rarely used models, he created his subjects, places, things, all of it – from memory. Above, the brushstrokes show the wear and tear of life as a fisherman. But the glow in his eyes is alive.  Shown here are two more demonstrating DIEGO’s ability to capture the feeling of life experience:

Diego and Helga, his widow, spent much time traveling to destinations where Diego could enjoy the sun, the laid back leisurely life, and of course the water.  When little Alessandra came into their life, she too would be whisked away to the shores of wherever the auto at the time would take them, while Diego would take it all in, sketching, drawing. The artist would then turn these memories into surrealism, figurative or realism, to cubism or produce a fantasy visual.

Versatility was Diego’s strength. Driven to experiment in every genre while remaining distinctly Diego“, Coop Cooprider – Diego Voci Historian since 1973

WHEN DID #INNOCENZO BECOME #DIEGO?

On this day on 10 August (1920) in Gasperina, Italy, Giuseppe Antonio Voci and Arcangela Messina Voci welcomed their second son, Antonio Innocenzo Voci  into this world… nicknamed “Toto” as a kid.  Antonio Voci never liked his middle name Innnocenzo.  It does not appear again in official documents other than the birth certificate on file in Gasperina.  He took the nickname “Diego”.

Tony Voci, nephew to Diego recalls traveling in Europe with his artist Uncle and about every hour they would stop at a café for a smoke and espresso.  To the surprise of Tony Voci, Diego was greeted as “Diego” everywhere.   “Diego” was his own celebrity.

The name “Diego” signed on his artwork didn’t come into play until 1966.  At encouragement of Naffouj Gallery he began signing his paintings “Diego”.  Prior to that it was some form of VOCI.  See signature section on #Wikipedia:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci#Gallery

The last known official document during Diego’s life was his 1976 Taunusstein Germany residence registration (see below) where “Diego” is listed as his middle name.

The December 10, 1985 Death Certificate ignores the birth middle name.

Some have wondered if Diego would have been more famous keeping the more unique name “Innocenzo” as his signature, rather than get lost in a swelling sea of Diegos, “Diego who?” .

Here’s a rewarding way to wish Antonio Diego Voci Happy Birthday.  Go to YouTube, click https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Diego+Voci and take a wonderful museum tour, a 20 year Diego retrospective covering two floors.  Or go to #Google, search “Diego  Voci” and click “Images”.

Chris V. had it right when he said, “Each movement had its great masters, but there are very few who could create art unconfined by a single style like Diego.”

The Diego Voci Project just received a cubistic portrayal of Venice from Diego collectors Morton Family after waiting 40 years to find them again.  They’ve owned a large Diego Collection since that time.

The Diego Voci Project has seen many exceptional cubist interpretations by Diego and “Gondole” ranks at or near the top.  We have asked the Morton’s for a better image reproducible for the Diego Archive, but, we couldn’t wait to share this masterful Diego art work with all of our members of the Addicted Diego Collectors Club.  Also to tempt the “New Generation” of art collectors to seek out and own a Diego.

Many of the original Diego collectors who bought directly from Diego (1965 thru 1985) are dead, dying or downsizing and their paintings are coming on the market everywhere.  People in the know are buying at very low prices from people who don’t know the significance of Diego’s great body of artwork.

Google “Diego Voci” to learn more.
