“SOMEWHERE #BEYOND THE #SEA”

Gente Al Mare #251-207 Liliane Dussard

Diego Voci; “Gente Al Mare” #251-207 oil on canvas 70x50cm

The #village #women seeing their men off on a fishing excursion, leaves them alone for sometimes weeks until their return. And sometimes a terrible #storm can take the men and the #boat with it.

Diego Voci wanted to get close to really know the #fisherman, what stories their #faces told. You could often find Diego at the #village gathering place overlooking the #ocean, #playingcards with the #fisherman.

LILIANE DUSSARD #HISTORY WITH DIEGO

Helga Voci, widow of Diego Voci shares;
“In the beginning of the seventies we moved to #Bavaria, where my parents lived and where they intended to build a house and Diego was supposed to help them. So, we rented an apartment in the same #village. At the same time Diego did not like doing business with Joy Naffouj anymore; and Liliane Dussard, a #French lady who had been working for Naffouj in her #gallery for a while, wanted to change also.

So, Diego and Liliane decided to work together (around 1972 for several years). Liliane came to our house and she started to take contacts with #Nürnberg Ladies Clubs and Officers’ Clubs and had soon several dates for #exhibits. Now we needed frames, as everything was an #experiment. In the village, we found a #wood joiner and Diego made models of frames, so he started to do a collection of frames in different sizes, then we got these frames and Diego`s atelier became a frame workshop. Diego painted on #canvases and Liliane and me painted and #gold-plated the frames under Diego`s instruction. We were almost working day and night, as everything had to be ready for our first exhibit.

And then we started our first exhibit in the Officers’ Club Fürth near Nürnberg and it was a very big success.”

(This history is a little fuzzy with dates): Liliane Dussard (deceased now) represented Diego beginning in 1972 and times throughout his years until 1985.

Liliane arranged art auctions at Officer’s Club, hosted Gallery exhibits for Diego and shared Holidays with Helga and Diego. (see Art Auction flyer below for 1985 “Dussard Art Studio” in Taunusstein). Artauction (1)

Lilian Dussard moved to the United States in 1973 and opened a gallery with her name: Dussard Art Gallery in Strafford, Virginia.

Jeunes Filles a la Fenetre Eugene Pizzo Jr Front Index card

This masterly rendered canvas by internationally collected artist Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985) is titled Jeunes Filles a la Fenêtre (Young Girl at the Window).  It was purchased by Eugene Pizzo Jr. in Spangdahlem on August 7, 1980 for $940.  This is one of a few thousand Diego works (including drawings) still scattered around the world.

As a viewer you are hereby anointed as a scout.  Go hunting.  They could be anywhere in any country on a wall, under the bed, in a garage, in a yard sale, in a gallery, on eBay.  They are out there somewhere.  Help make Diego Voci history complete. diegovociproject@gmail.com

Rest In Peace Lee (Voci) Iatesta

Diego’s niece, Lee, passed away at the age of 85 last Sunday in her home in Broomall, Pennsylvania. Lee, of all Diego’s relatives, was the most like her wandering artist Uncle. A gifted painter and sculptor in her own right, Lee inherited the genes of the artist. Lee entered a class of over 100 women at Immaculata College in 1949 and was one of only 32 to graduate in a time when few women went to college and most left before graduating to get married and start a family. Lee taught French, raised two wonderful daughters and inspired her children to explore the world.

The post below tells the story of Lee and Diego meeting for the fist time in Europe. Her sculpture of the mother and child was typical of her figurative work. One can see the brushstrokes of Diego in the shapes Lee created.

We remember Lee this Christmas Day and know that she is with her Uncle Diego in Heaven.
