#Christie’s exhibition explores the art historical influences behind Dolce&Gabbana’s Alta Moda, Alta Gioielleria and Alta Sartoria collections. Established by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in 1985, Italian fashion brand Dolce&Gabbana is celebrated for its theatrical designs that incorporate luxurious fabrics, opulent embellishments and hand finishes. ‘Dolce&Gabbana has always drawn on culture, costume and art history for their designs,’ comments Flavia Lefebvre D’Ovidio, Old Masters Paintings specialist at Christie’s in London. ‘They pay homage to the past, whilst transmitting a sense of glamour, richness and opulence.’ Art Adorned (22 November to 3 December 2019) is a new exhibition at Christie’s in London that explores the enduring influence of the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo movements on Dolce&Gabbana’s Alta Moda, Alta Gioielleria and Alta Sartoria collections, their homage to luxury and Italian craftsmanship.

In 2018, 20 most expensive lots showed a healthy market that continued to churn out new records for major artists, despite many top lots selling on just a few bids or less. Collectors fought over paintings, furniture, and ephemera from the collection of Peggy and David #Rockefeller, which racked up $832.6 million in sales—the most for an #estate in #history. #Asian collectors continued to muscle their way into the top echelon of the auction #world, both by securing major works at sales in New York and by buying big lots during sales in #HongKong and #Beijing.

Just as Christie’s has been predicting—one might even say, hyping—81-year-old British artist David Hockney became the most expensive living painter tonight when Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) sold for $90.3 million at the postwar and contemporary art auction in Rockefeller Center. All told, the sale realized a total of $357.6 million, compared with a revised pre-sale estimate of $323 million to $421.5 million.
The record-making Hockney’s unpublished pre-sale estimate had been $70 million to $100 million, though much of the pre-sale chatter guessed $80 million as the likely level.
Generating almost as much buzz as the sky-high asking price was the fact that the Hockney painting went to the block without any type of guarantee—almost unheard of in this day and age, when consignors know how to play the big auction houses off against one another.
If you thought it was the bottom one you would not be alone. The top painting that sold on February 28, 2017 for $25 million dollars at Christie’s in London is not the typical bold style Gauguin is known for (Google “Gauguin images“).
The lower painting is by Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985) from the private collection of Patti and Coop Cooprider. Google has selected a few dozen of Diego Voci art works for display in their gallery of Diego Voci Images. Google “Diego Voci” and click “Images”.
