#ESCAPE FROM #REALITY

There is a great beauty to be found in Diego’s subjects.

Words by Stephen Max; “Diego’s artwork reminds us of the simple human love of a mother for a child, of the nurturing gaze of all mothers, and the comfort they bring. We see the best of ourselves in them. His impossibly gorgeous execution of  Suonatrice di Linto was completed while living in Schwetzingen Germany in 1975  and his focus was upon the beauty of the human spirit.
Diego painted with immense beauty and grace, executing his work with painstaking care and attention to detail. Each of his brushstrokes was an act of love, and little by little, something breathtakingly beautiful came into formation. Overall a sense of comfort and peace soothe the onlooker liberating the stress embodied in everyday life. The beauty and tenderness of her face, that portrait of love and softness, encompasses every detail of this masterpiece.
In February 1975 we were entertained by Helga and Diego in their Schwetzingen home (near Heidelberg Germany).  After enjoying an exceptional wine, reacquainting ourselves with Helga, and meeting Diego for the first time, we observed this unfinished painting on an easel in his studio. The exceptional beauty and serenity of the painting could be easily visualized in its finished state and we simply had to have it. Following a good natured and animated dialogue, Diego agreed to complete the painting exclusively for us. We re-visited two weeks later for the purchase of this masterpiece and have enjoyed Suonatrice di Linto placed in a prominent location in our home ever since.”
The completed Masterpiece.

NOT FOR SALE

Deux Filles au Bleu 50 x 60cm 1968

Diego Voci; “Deux Filles au Bleu” 50x60cm oil on canvas ca. 1968

This painting, was listed on The Diego Voci Project website as “Not for Sale”.

Stephen & Wendy Max (volunteers for the Diego Voci Project Team) were immediately attracted to this portrait of two young women-with dark blank eyes, sensuous lips without a smile -conveying a message of noble beauty. Eventually and gratefully we were able to convince Helga to part with her treasured painting.

When Stephen & Wendy Max finally received the painting we asked Helga why “Deux Filles au Bleu” meant so much to her, here is her response:

Dear Stephen and Wendy,
I am happy that you like the painting and I know that with you it is in good hands and that you really appreciate it. The story about it is that when we lived in Wiesbaden between 1965 and 1970 we went one time to Prague where we went several times because we both liked the City and we always went through little antique shops, they had many there and we found this beautiful frame and Diego said- I will paint you a beautiful painting for this frame and that was -Deux filles au bleu- and I loved it and carried it where ever we moved. …Helga Voci

Commentary John Krueger Writer for Stars & Stripes Part II:

“Another character that often reoccurs in DIEGO’s portraits is the #clown – earnest, ruddy peasant faces under the #white makeup and the #red rose, true #children of “LA COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE”.

The memory of the classic form, always present in the subconscious of this truly modern #artist, gives a higher meaning and a more complex form to the work of DIEGO.  His groups of figures – here again he favors young voluptuous women – produce an almost three #dimensional effect, which is achieved by a competent use of the laws of perspective rather than by optical tricks, as, in the case of the #cubist #paintings.

Episodes and intellectual adventures, which may at times attract great curiosity and interest among public and critics, bear very little resemblance to the fundamental values of art.  Too many collective and individual phenomena dismay and disappoint art lovers looking at modern art today.  Still, there are some artists who, unaffected by trends and passing fashions, dedicate themselves to the search for truth and beauty.  DIEGO is such a man.”

ARTIST #DiegoVoci™ #HUMANISM RECEIVES NOTORIETY

Content below is from page 7 of the 8 page #1974 Diego Catalog by Coop Cooprider, #DiegoVoci™#Historian.

Commentary John Krueger Writer for #Stars & #Stripes Part I:

C39 Friends ca. 1966 23 23 x 47 14 #1159-68 ORIGINAL

“Antonio DIEGO Voci considers the human face to be the most direct an effective way to illustrate and to express his intimate #poetical #world.  DIEGO’S deep concern for people reveals the painter’s #humanism, his #gift for perception, his #warmth, #equilibrium and #serenity of vision which are very characteristic of the #Italian temperament.

DIEGO’s oil #portraits of young #women – with #dark melancholy eyes, sensuous lips without a smile – convey a message of noble #beauty that transcends the physical portrait and becomes the revelation of a #soul, bringing to mind the sorrowful mysticism of the Italian painters of the XVth Century.

DIEGO’s great reverence and admiration for the Italian painters of the XVth and XVIth centuries, above all #Michelangelo and #Botticelli, can be sensed in his works, which are far from being a mere imitation of the classics and could be better described as a modern interpretation of the immortal ideals which have, through the centuries, uplifted the spirit of humanity through beauty artistically expressed.

Besides oils, #DIEGO works in #charcoal, #watercolors, #ink, #tempera, and #pastels.  Sometimes he combines ink and water color in a way reminiscent of #Japanese #art.  The dark outlines enhanced by splashes of flowing color given an impression of form in movement which is exceedingly decorative.

DIEGO is a painter of uncommon versatility and prolificacy, an intellectual devoid of all intellectualisms, an intelligent interpreter of #modern art movements who possesses the moral courage to remain faithful to his own personal dreams, inflexibly rejecting all influences alien to a nature nurtured under the glorious Italian skies, by the examples of the greatest artists of all times.”

“DIEGO is one of the few artistic personalities whose paintings really appeal to people.  They understand, they get excited about, and they really enjoy living with DIEGO’S art.  The beauty of his paintings and the desire of possession are often so immense that people gradually acquire more and more of his work.   DIEGO buyers soon become DIEGO collectors.” – Herr Dahms, Galerie Dahms, #Wiesbaden

THE #WARMTH OF #SPAIN

#Max and #DiegoVoci™ PART FOUR

SONY DSC

DiegoVoci

Scene Espagnolewas purchased through Diego’s home in June of 1976.

“During our tour in #Europe we spent many wonderful #vacations and traveled throughout #Spain. It was during these vacation trips we came to appreciate the vibrant #culture and #beauty of the #Spanish people. When we saw the painting “Scene Espagnole” we understood immediately that it reflected our own feelings of the beauty of #Spain.

Diego’s ability to articulate the #life of people through his #art is unparalleled.

We not only have our own memories of Spain, we appreciate a constant visual reminder of these memories through this #painting and Diego’s art. It was 1976 during our final visit to #Diego’s home in #Schwetzingen we instantly developed a deep appreciation for “Scene Espagnole”. We had by this time, in preparation for our repatriation, converted all of our funds to #Canadian #Dollars and transferred our finances to #Edmonton. Diego’s extraordinary insight and sensitivity focused like a laser beam on our situation and our attraction to this painting. Understanding this, Diego gave us the painting without deposit, simply on our promise we would pay for it on our return to #Canada.

When a few years later I had the opportunity to discuss his trust in me with this painting, I asked Diego what he would do if I hadn’t paid him as I promised, to which he immediately replied, in his playful good natured way  “I would have come to Canada and killed you”.

#DIEGO, THE INNOVATOR INCESSANTLY EXPERIMENTING

From the DIEGO Voci Collection ca. 1974, a piece from his glass painting series, the painting titled “Women and Blue Pottery” is done with Glass Paint on canvas.

DIEGO defies being put in a box.  He was constantly experimenting.  Glass paint was a real challenge.  There is no second chance to change the paint once it hits the canvas.  DIEGO’s sure hand is all the more evident in “Women and Blue Pottery”, one of a dozen known DIEGO works with glass paint.

If you know of others, let us know at the only authorized Diego Voci Archive, diegovociproject@gmail.com.
