1974 DIEGO VOCI #BENEDICTINE #CONTEST ENTRY

In 1974 #DIEGO was invited to participate in the 12th Annual BENEDICTINE Art Awards in #NY (USA). #DIEGO showed no interest. The Diego Voci Historian, Coop Cooprider,  offered to buy DIEGO’s creation in advance, on the condition it would be submitted to the #BENEDICTINE event. DIEGO agreed. DIEGO had complete freedom on what to paint.

This 1974 full image (30″ x 24″ sand based paint on canvas- BELOW) with the 14″ BENEDICTINE bottle shows the result as submitted to the BENEDICTINE event.

Now look closely (BELOW) at the second full image 30″ x 24″ of the same painting. What happened to the BENEDICTINE bottle? It’s gone!

When DIEGO learned he did not win, he retaliated, and obliterated the BENEDICTINE bottle and its labels. Before the Diego Voci Art Historian, Coop Cooprider could pick up the paid-in-advance “BENEDICTINE” painting, DIEGO had clandestinely painted out all evidence of his disappointing BENEDICTINE experience. DIEGO transformed the BENEDICTINE bottle into a 14″ pink pitcher adding a handle (see ABOVE).

Artist Diego Voci was a Man of the People

Helga Voci, Diego’s lover, wife and confidant from 1960 until his death from lung cancer (chain smoker), wrote in her biography, her memory;

“Diego played cards with the Fishermen”

Here is an example of Diego’s memory of 3 Fisherman we found in an old faded Polaroid from 1974.

THE LOOK OF A #SUCCESSFUL #ARTIST

Content below is from the back cover of the 8 page #1974 Diego Catalog by Coop Cooprider, #DiegoVoci™#Historian.

“When is finished the art piece? Never.  Any painting I can add more.  When I put my signature, for me it is finished.  I don’t say I’m satisfied.  I’m never satisfied.”  – DIEGO

A Clown… A Lion… A TV Guide… What Do They All Have in Common?

…DIEGO!!!

These are the first two of 4 pages of the first published #DIEGO article resulting from my 1974 short lived efforts to help #DIEGO become better known.

The last two pages follow in the next post. The article was written by Victoria Williams. A photo of her interviewing #DIEGO will follow.

Notice the pathos #DIEGO captured in the #clown. The original oil was stolen from the attic of the house The Coopriders rented in #Germany. The Coopriders suspected it was taken by the landlord’s son. There is a $30,000 reward for it’s return.

Here is another example where the unbelievable craze of the #Keane Big Eyes influenced Diego Voci fans to beg him to paint his version of #BigEyes for them to add to their collection of Diego artworks. Reluctantly to please a few good customers Diego did paint a few with rounder eyes, but maintained his distinctive touch of the brush on canvas. If you did not yet see the movie Big Eyes with #Margaret played by #Amy_Adams, do so. A narcissistic cold-hearted imposter who could not paint, married the real artist Margaret, but put his name “Keane” on all of her canvasses and promoted himself and the art into an international phenomenon.
