THE #JOURNEY OF “L’ARLEQUIN TRISTE” BY #DIEGO UNFOLDED

Diego Voci; “L’Arlequin Triste” oil on canvas #5812-174

This painting L’Arlequin Triste by internationally collected artist Antonio Diego Voci (VOH-chee 1920-1985) was wrapped in packaging for 40 years (owned by the original owner of Talbert’s Kleine Galeria in Tacoma, WA.).

Days ago… this painting L’Arlequin Triste arrived to its new owner, packing material removed and looks as if DIEGO had just finished painting this piece.

From the archives of Helga Voci, she shares her words her travels with Diego during the 1980’s to the United States. “On that trip in 1980 we went to N.Y. and Philadelphia where Diego has family still today. We also went to Tacoma, Washington, where Diego had an exhibit in a gallery called – Talbert`s Kleine Galerie in Gig Harbor, WA. Then on to San Francisco, New Orleans, Albuquerque. And again we drove to Colorado Springs. Along the way, we visited with many American friends we had met in Germany. At several places, we had private shows. We both liked the United States very much.” https://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-history-4330818/Page2.html#44298

Thanks to Gigi #Guadagnucci while in #Paris, Diego was introduced to Helga Drössler… it is a great chance meeting at “LES DEUX MAGOTS“. Diego said,

“The real academy is in the Cafe…. where you meet so many artists.”

THE CASE OF THE PHANTOM? #VOCI BROTHER

Can anyone out there read #Italian?  Help us!  As DiegoVoci™ #historians we are seeking the truth.

The issue is:

Did, or did not, the deceased father of artist DiegoVoci™, Giuseppe Antonio Voci  have a brother?

In the little town of Gasperina, Province of #Catanzaro, #Italy, the birthplace of DiegoVoci™ resides an elderly gentleman in his nineties who claims he was the best friend of Diego’s father Giuseppe Antonio Voci and he insists did NOT have a brother!

But, what appears to be the images of the official birth records going back 192 years to 1823 from the town’s Registrar of Vital Statistics (“Ufficio dello Stato Civile”) in #Gasperina seem to indicate there was a brother named Saverio.  Two sons appear to be born to the same mother and father Vincenzo Voci (1847) and Elisabetta (neé Procopia).  One of the sons born 1877 was Giuseppe Antonio (Diego’s dad). The other son, Saverio Voci, was born 3 years earlier to the same mother and father.  Therefore the official papers appear that Diego’s father Giuseppe Antonio did have an older brother named Saverio.

Help us with the Italian on the Birth Certificates.  Is the #Gasperina Registrar’s office in error?  Or is the elderly gentleman mistaken?  They can’t both be correct.  It would be highly unlikely there were two sets of Vincenzo and Elizabetta in the same time period?

Here is the evidence from the “Ufficio dello Stato Civile” Comune di Gasperina :

  1. Giuseppe Antonio Voci was born 1877 to Vincenzo Voci and his wife Elisabetta (neé Procopia). 01.26.2015 Giuseppe Antonio Voci Birth Certificates for Website with Marks
  2. 3 years earlier a Saverio Voci was born 1874 to the same parents as Giuseppe Antonio01.26.2015 Saverio Voci Birth Certificate for Website with Marks - Copy

1a. Here is the 1877 signature of the Gasperina official on the birth certificate of Giuseppe Antonio.01.26.2015 Official Lugi signature from Giuseppe Antonio Voci Birth Certificate

1b.  Here is the 1874 signature of the same official on the birth certificate for Saverio, with the same parents for both.  01.26.2015 Official Lugi signature from Saverio Voci Birth Certificate

The questions being asked by members of the Diego side of the Voci family are:  Why haven’t we ever heard there was such a brother? And, if he did exist, what happened to him? Is the Saverio birth certificate suspect?

What do you think?

MOTHER’S PORTRAIT BY DIEGO AND NEW GENERATION

Mother's Portrait 003

This painting signed “D. Voci 1964” is an important historical find.  Why?

It fills a gap.  We have images of 2 watercolors Diego did as a gift to his nephew Tony signed D. Voci 1957 when they traveled Europe together.  We have the larger realism “Alt und Yung” signed “A.Voci” when Schlossgalerie, Zurich provided Diego a studio for R. Buri’s wealthy clients.  All three are represented in the Wikipedia biography Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci

Where were Helga and Diego living in 1964?  Helga wrote:

We came to a small medieval town in northern Italy, called Asolo with only 1000 inhabitants. We rented an apartment in a very old house in the middle of the town with a big terrace and Diego made his first real Studio. He mostly sold in Zurich in the Schloßgalerie.”

The “Diego” signature began in 1965 with Joy Gibson, a Canadian art dealer.  That signature would dominate all others for the next 20 years.

Mike Kennedy is part of the “New Generation” of “Diego” collectors through the inheritance of his mother’s portrait.  Mike reached us through diegovoci.com and we requested additional information.  We await with eagerness the photos of his family and Diego.
