Diego Voci; Pferde auf Weide; 61x108cm oil on canvas, signed “Voci”

This is only the 4th “VOCI” discovered so far from the era of Diego’s connection to the Schlossgalerie (who served a wealthy horse owner clientele) in Zurich advertised as “Antonio Voci”, 1962-1965. It is the first that DVP could acquire for the day a generous benefactor is willing to finance a major Diego Museum Exhibition.

In his early career internationally collected artist Antonio Innocenzo Voci (1920-1985) signed his works some form of VOCI (VOH-chee).  He was known his nickname by “Diego”. About 1966 he began using the “Diego” signature through 1985.

Here are the 3 other examples of “VOCI” paintings:

IS THIS #JOSIANE?

George Roberts, a #Diego Collector shares his “Nude” #painting that resembles the look of Josiane, the first wife of Diego Voci.

You can read a bit more on Antonio Diego Voci Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci#First_marriage

George Roberts, shares his story about how he acquired this Diego work of art:

“We have a “nude” painting by Diego that was purchased at the Patch Barracks Officers Club in Germany in the late 1960’s from an American female who told us that this was a painting of Diego’s first wife. We paid $250.00 for the painting which was a lot of money in those days. We did not meet Diego. The painting is oil on canvas and measures approx.31” x 21” in the original frame. There is no title on the back of the canvas however a number 1697-9.” (The number on the back of the canvas represents the timing of the painting was complete)

See here images of Josiane (taken in the 1960’s) to compare with the Diego painting owned by George Roberts.

Signature “Voci” early works 1960’s by Diego Voci.

The signature “Voci” is rare as most of the Diego’s works before 1965 (signed A.Voci). (see image above).  The “Diego” signature was signed for a 20 year period (1965-1985).  Historically, this painting is considered a prominent work of art as it was during a time period in Diego’s life when he painted at Schlossgalerie in Zurich, Switzerland.

This #Voci painting was first discovered on Artifact Collectors back in May 12, 2014. http://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-voci-painting-of-the-week-april-22-2013-6491218.html#78216.  It was posted under the name “Nadja”.  We have tried to contact without result.
This is an example of a work of art The Diego Voci Project would like to have in our Major Museum Exhibition (generous benefactor needed).

The all-volunteer non-profit Diego Voci Project Team is the only authorized Diego Voci Archive of all of the prolific work of internationally collected Antonio Diego Voci http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci.

#AMERICANPHAROAH AND #DIEGOVOCI

Internationally collected artist Diego Voci (VOH-chee 1920-1985) cheered from beyond when the exhilarating sound of the crowds echoed through the heavens watching #AmericanPharoah cross the #TripleCrown finish line at #BelmontStakes.  The victory came with such ease as #AmericanPharoah looked like he and his jockey #VictorEspinoza were out for a Saturday pleasure ride.

Diego loved horses.  His drawings and paintings of the equine number in the tens of hundreds scattered around the world, most of them yet to be discovered.  You can help find them.  Here is one with a collector in England signed VOCI and with a brass plate on the frame with “Antonio Voci” etched in.  It is confirmed that the grandfather of the owner of “Horses Racing” received a trophy by the Queen of England for racing horses.

NOTE: “Diego” signature did not begin until after 1965 “Horses Racing” was originally sold by Schlossgalerie in Zurich.  See 1965 advertisement.  http://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-history-4330818.html#43343

#DIEGO Portrayal of a German #Supper

John and Cindy Silvers were stationed at #Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany from 1965 to 1968. In October of 1966 the Silvers’ acquired two DIEGO’s they presently still own: “Supper” and “Girl with Pitcher.” Joy Gibson-Naffouj in Landstuhl, #Germany represented DIEGO at that time. Shown here is “Supper” (60×80 cm):

SUPPER Nr 1182 60 x 80cm

Supper” (in German “#Abendessen”). The hot main meal of the day in Germany is usually eaten at lunchtime. In the early evening as the last meal of the day one dines on bread with cold cuts and cheese. Wine or hot tea often accompany this typical dinner or “Supper”. In Diego’s rendition of the old man having ‘supper’ one observes the flame indicating it is evening, using the knife to perhaps cut some cheese or meat as his next bite, and a bread roll or “Brötchen” lies next to the plate. The glass of wine and the bottle are part of this old man’s meal. A very typical ‘supper’ in Germany in the day.

John adds, “The frames were made to look old and I don’t know who did that, but we like them. We wouldn’t sell the “Supper,” that will go to our youngest daughter Marni, who did a pencil drawing of it, which was quite good, so she loves the picture.”

An unfortunate health issue put Cindy in the Landstuhl Hospital in Germany – not far from where John worked at Ramstein AFB. She had a stroke at the young age of 29. John explained that Cindy was left with whole right side paralyzed and she couldn’t speak, caused by aphasia. Her right leg came back about 85%; but above the waist, nothing. She was finally able to speak in speech therapy when she sneezed and the therapist quickly said, “What did you say, Cindy? She said, I love you John.” She is quite a fighter and never felt sorry for herself. Cindy raised their four children: John, Lori, Marni and Kevin to adulthood and was an antique dealer in an antique mall.” John retired from the Air Force as a Major in 1972 and then again in 1999 from the Insurance business. business. Cindy and John now reside in Colorado.

John added in a later e-mail to us here at the Diego Voci Project, “Actually, I just recalled that we purchased three paintings. The other was of a Arab man with very dark eyes. The man was just shown as a head and shoulder image. The size of the canvas would be the same and the frame also the same as the two pictured above. When we returned from Germany, a Doctor saw the painting and wanted to have it for his office, so we sold it to him. That’s all I can recall about the third painting.”

THE #DIEGO NAME #MYSTERY

How and when did Antonio Innocenzo Voci (No Diego), born August 10, 1920 in the small village of Gasperina, Italy become known as “Diego”?

Friends and family called him “TOTO” in his years of youth (No Diego).

Diego (Toto) Reincarnated NEW YORKER CARTOON 22 JAN 2015

Somewhere from “TOTO” there was a change to “Diego” even though he would not sign his art “Diego” until 1965.  Early works of art were signed some form of VOCI.  As late as 1965, his works were advertised by Schloßgalerie, #Zürich, as Antonio Voci (Not Diego).  He signed “A. Voci”.

Yet much earlier he was called “Diego.”  How & when is unknown.  Anthony “Tony” Voci in 1957 (son of Diego’s older brother Vincenzo) toured Europe with “Diego”.  Tony said in an interview;

“Every town we drove thru, Diego would say we need to stop for an espresso and cigarette”…. When Diego would walk into the restaurants, the owners would welcome him as “Diego”.”

Diego signed “D. Voci 1957” on the gifts he drew for Tony during the same travels.

In 1960 the famous sculptor Gigi #Guadagnucci used the name “Diego” to introduce him to Helga at the Les Deux Magots café in Paris.  Helga knew her husband-to-be as “Diego” for their 25 years together.

He first signed his work “Diego” in 1965 when Joy Gibson, the Canadian art dealer began representing his work.

In 1970, he signed a contract with Dr. Jawdat Naffouj, as “Antonio Diego.”

In 1974, he signed a contract with Cooprider signing “Diego Voci”.

1976 was the first time he offered his name as Antonio “Diego” Voci on an official government document.  It was with the town of Taunusstein for a residence permit required to buy the house / studio where Diego & Helga lived together until his death in 1985.  Helga maintains the same address.

So again, the big question is: how and when did “Toto” become “Diego”?  Can you help?

You can see a few signatures from his paintings on Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/diegovoci/signatures/ and Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Diego_Voci#Gallery
