#DIEGO COLLECTOR FOUND IN #CALIFORNIA

3 years ago, we the DIEGO VOCI PROJECT posted an exquisite artwork by Antonio DIEGO Voci asking “Where is it Now?” We heard nothing. So, I (Kami Cooprider) happened to see the Index Card which #Helga_Voci created to track #DIEGO’s sales over the years, shown below the true color image here: “Arlequin sur la Plage” by #DIEGO

Arlequin sur la Plage” by DIEGO_VOCI (161-433, 20 x 24 in. Overall size 26.25 x 30.25 in.)

I decided to search for the owner’s name on the card. Low and behold there was a man of the same name right nearby in Chula Vista, CA – just miles down the road from San Diego. Making a photocopy, I snail-mailed the images to Gene A. and gave him our DVP phone number! 2 days later the call came in. Gene was as surprised by our mail as we were to hear back from him. YES, he still owned this exquisite oil painting “Arlequin sur la Plage” and it graces Gene’s walls still today! And,he owns 2 more #DIEGO artworks!

Better still is the story Gene shared about how, while visiting with DIEGO, he noticed there was a trace of a figure on the wall on the left next to the #Harlequin:

So, Gene asked DIEGO to paint over it some before taking it home. Yet, here we are 40 years later and the figure is starting to slowly reappear according to Gene. The next day Gene sent an image of the back of the canvas – here you see it. DIEGO often painted over canvases and always said, You don’t ask yourself what day do you have the idea… it grows from yourself.” – DIEGO Quote from Victoria Williams article 1974.

Antonio DIEGO Voci (1920-1985) was a #Master of #Surrealism:

“La #fille du #port” by #DIEGO

La fille du port” owned by Tom Frinta  and his wife Ena is best described in Tom’s own words,                                                                                                                                                    “La fille du port” is actually my favorite picture. I look at it several times a day. There is a very precious meaning. Her expression shows that poverty does not reduce the human values. Her face is still so beautiful and sovereign although she cannot afford a new dress.”

La fille du port” (Girl from the Harbor), Oil on Canvas, 70×80 cm, #641-037)

After connecting with Tom in March of 2015, the DVP found that not only did Tom share an exciting and clandestine adventure with “Diego” himself, this exquisite oil painting by Diego has a story of it’s own. To read about their “energizing” #adventure click on link at bottom of the WP post.

Circa 1973 Helga #Voci began keeping index cards of Diego oil #paintings, cards not found again until this year. Of recent DVP discovered 2 cards for the same painting. Coop has been the Diego Voci #Historian since #1973 and he and wife Patti continue to collect Diego #artwork and proudly display them with no intent to let go of any Diego artwork!

In 1974 Coop purchased“La fille du port” in Diego’s studioDiego later, on Christine Khan’s behalf, asked Coop & Patti for some of their Diego collection to keep Christine in business.  Since Coop let Patti choose a few, he had no idea which paintings were selected. Fortunately and unfortunately it ended up including the “La fille du port”.La fille du port 3 Images in 1 for post 3 DEC 2017

Once we made the connection of 2 Index cards selling the same painting the mystery was solved. Sold to Coop in 1974, it was resold to Tom in 1980, who proudly refers to Diego as his “close friend Antonio”.  “La fille du port” is in good hands with Tom and Ena.

Coop says “Tom has great taste”and that had he known Patti selecting this one          he’d have stopped her!

#Diego’s LADY ON THE BEACH #1972

“Lady on the Beach” 1972

” Lady on the Beach, 1972 is impressive in its high-contrast composition and vibrant color as well as its content and size (23″ x 40″). This and other works from the early 1970s shows DIEGO stretching his artistic chops into the realm of #surrealism with fauvist-inspired color. We love this painting because of its uniqueness and the craft with which #DIEGO frames the Lady within the #surrealistic landscape. The composition is at once pure figurative DIEGO within a broader surrealistic and #fauvist backdrop.

DIEGO positions the Lady reclined with a vase, referential perhaps to the symbolism of Mary Magdalene . The typical DIEGO comparisons of Modigliani and Matisse are expanded in this piece with the thought and color of #André Derain and maybe Maurice de Vlaminck. It is certainly a different and extraordinary piece.” C.V. 2012
