DIEGO’s #CARICATURES 1970’s ERA

#Skeeter Dan #Skiing signed “Voci” 1974 & #Skier “Steverino” (aka Stephen Max) by unknown #artist

Dan and Arlene surprised the DVP with a rare caricature signed “Voci” they cherish, in addition to an exquisite oil painting by DIEGO they bought from Diego directly in Wiesbaden, Germany while Dan was stationed there. Here are Dan’s words: “I met Diego several times. See the attached “all-in-fun” sketch by Diego. He asked me what my sport was I said skeet shooting. He thought I said skiing, but I corrected him. So, you see both sports in the sketch, my broken skis and a shotgun. We purchased the painting directly from him at the Wiesbaden Officers Club”:

“Old Man with Girl”, 24 x 20 inches, Oil on Canvas, 1970’s, by Antonio DIEGO Voci.

Thank you Dan and Arlene for being a part of the DIEGO VOCI PROJECT since 2016!

Just over 40 years ago in Toronto Canada, Stephen and Wendy Max created an exhibit for Diego that was unprecedented on this continent. Advertising in the Toronto Star the outreach was beyond what DIEGO had seen across the ocean. Stephen and Wendy new Diego well before they left Germany where Stephen was stationed with the Canadian Royal Air Force.

Little could we know that 30 years later Stephen and Coop Cooprider, Diego Voci Historian since 1974, would join forces to promote and enhance the legacy of Antonio Diego Voci (1920-1985). Stephen has since created our diegovociproject.com website, produced and published three books, over 40 videos, and promotes a free monthly newsletter. There is a great story about how Coop and Stephen connected in 1974 and didn’t know it. Read more here: https://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-voci-antonio-diego-voci-3984818/Page15.html#88728

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH DIEGO VOCI

In honor of the last few days celebrating Black History Month, the Diego Voci Project presents number 7 in the “COLORBLIND SERES” with “Jeune fille Avec Port Jaune”. An exquisite portrait of an African “Young Girl with a Yellow Pot” acquired by Captain Gene Page in 1974 from Antonio DIEGO Voci  at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany.

Captain Page had very good taste! Appreciate the bold color contrast and the folds in the fabric. Where is this painting today? We would like to know.

The image comes from hundreds of index cards, which Helga, Diego’s widow kept to document Diego sales. Faded by time the old photos lost their OOMPF. Shown here is the index card and photo, next to what the painting may have looked like as originally envisioned by Diego. Stephen Max, Producer for the DVP, brought the beautiful young African girl in the painting back to life.

Here are links to the series the “Colorblind” presented by our DVP team. Diego embraced every skin color. Because in truth, ALL lives matter:

4 DIEGO VOCI TREASURES FOUND AT ESTATE SALE – NUMBER 2

Diego never left the significance of his religious upbringing far behind. Diego carries it with him throughout his life in his artistic creations, sometimes quite obvious and intended, sometimes more subtly hidden. Tom Catron now owns this masterpiece:ALLTAG for POST w Title et al 6 APR 2018

ALLTAG” shown above presents the observer with the every-day activities of a little town (“Alltag” = every day life) in rich colors, details of the mundane which give them another day to look forward too. Going to market, catching up on the town news, sitting in a café, having lunch, or simply walking about.

If you look closely, to the top right, take note of the small alcove which houses a religious figure holding something in its arms. Two things come to mind, which DIEGO so wonderfully rendered: Saint Antonio (Diego’s namesake) with baby Jesus and/or Mother and Child. Cleverly tucked away, DIEGO places the alcove with heartfelt intent.

Diego captured every day activities because he could relate to them. His matriarch grandmother Messina Arcangela and the family were devout Catholics. As a young boy with his father in Rome, Diego arrived at home only to carve his first small religious artifact since he’d seen one in a shop window. Diego also sincerely depicts “Mother and Child” (“Maternité”) in hundreds of paintings and other media, as well as artworks of monks and Christ. Religion was simply part of  Antonio DIEGO Voci’s every day life: “ALLTAG”. See more on DIEGO and his family on our Pinterest Boards: https://www.pinterest.com/diegovoci/

See NUMBER ONE from the Estate Auction in South Dakota, which Tom happened to attend, never having known of Antonio DIEGO Voci (1920-1985) at all!  He does now!https://diegovociproject.wordpress.com/2018/04/09/diego-voci-treasure-found-at-estate-sale/

4 DIEGO VOCI TREASURES FOUND AT ESTATE SALE – NUMBER 1

When was the last time you went to a 2nd hand store, antique store, or even an Estate Auction? Tom in South Dakota went to an Estate Auction and found not just one oil painting by Antonio DIEGO Voci (1920-1985) but a total of 4 oil paintings by the internationally collected artist, mostly known as “DIEGO” to all who have been lucky enough to meet him during his short lifetime. Meet the 1st of the 4: “FISCHER”FISCHER for POST w Title et al 6 APR 2018When Tom first saw “Fischer” come up for auction – he was taken by the rugged and well-lived look!  Diego was raised in Gasperina a small town in the southern region of Calabria, Italy. Diego loved people and proved this having lived his life loving people of all kind, ages, professions – as long as there was a passion of some kind. And,  Diego rarely used models, he created his subjects, places, things, all of it – from memory. Above, the brushstrokes show the wear and tear of life as a fisherman. But the glow in his eyes is alive.  Shown here are two more demonstrating DIEGO’s ability to capture the feeling of life experience:

Fisherman of Naples (ABRAMS) and Pescatore (TURK) 7 APR 2018 for FISCHER POST KC

Diego and Helga, his widow, spent much time traveling to destinations where Diego could enjoy the sun, the laid back leisurely life, and of course the water.  When little Alessandra came into their life, she too would be whisked away to the shores of wherever the auto at the time would take them, while Diego would take it all in, sketching, drawing. The artist would then turn these memories into surrealism, figurative or realism, to cubism or produce a fantasy visual.

Versatility was Diego’s strength. Driven to experiment in every genre while remaining distinctly Diego“, Coop Cooprider – Diego Voci Historian since 1973

Check out every genre by going to GOOGLE or BING! Enter “Diego Voci”, & immediately click on “IMAGES”. Pronto!   You will arrive in GOOGLE’s Diego Gallery as Google themselves select their own, as do all other search engines. Tom was fortunate to discover 4 DIEGO oil paintings. The DIEGO VOCI PROJECT is proud to share stories of our new DIEGO fans. Unfortunately, many older DIEGO fans have passed on or are downsizing.  The DVP will continue to bring you stories like Tom’s.

DIEGO VOCI #ART TREASURES POP UP AGAIN!

Tom Catron, at an auction last year in Marion, South Dakota, was initially “struck by the Diego FISCHER painting”, decided to bid, and suddenly owned his first Diego artwork!  Noticing just shortly after his winning bid Tom saw 3 other Diego Voci oil paintings pop up! Tom recently wrote the DVP that he “ended up buying all 4 that were available.”  Here are the Diego art treasures shown together:

CATRONs 4 TREASURE FINDS TOGETHER for POST 6 APR 2018

“Fischer”                            “Alltag”                            “Clown for dem Zirkuszelt”            “Grouping”              All by ANTONIO “DIEGO” VOCI (1920-1985)

We will feature Tom’s auction finds here individually with all of the details to follow – for you to appreciate their essence, brush strokes, hues of color and a unique touch or two.

Some of you recall that the DIEGO VOCI PROJECT (DVP) got its start thanks to Mary Trimmins on ARTIFACT COLLECTORS 10 years ago? Mary’s post drew names like Colonel Steve Snow (“formermil”), Christiane Hauk, Mary Helfrich, Detlev Albrecht, Stan Wilcox, Stephen Max and a few scarce other DIEGO fans to this AC thread.

Tom Catron recently found the AC thread, “registered as a member”, which then prompted AC to send us a message! Unfortunately, “Guests” galore who have not registered are still lost in AC CyberSpace.

Now, the DVP has a number of social media outlets for new and seasoned DIEGO aficionados to show off their masterpieces! WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.  And, now when you Google “DiegoVoci”, click “Images” you’ll see Google’s selection for its own DIEGO gallery! The all-volunteer DVP team has cataloged each one of the artworks in the only officially authorized Diego Voci Estate Archive!

Tom’s treasures shown above were taken as straight-on squared images, no flash (daylight is often better if not too bright). He sent measurements to reflect the actual canvas size without the frame, most easily measured from the back of the artwork. In the above images we have cropped the frames. Images with frames though can highlight the genre or theme as intended by DIEGO and/or the collector; also, frames can give us an idea of when DIEGO put his hands, eyes, and soul to the canvas in front of him.

Last, the DVP can also learn from the images of the backs – many have written information, stamps, or other markings; as well as the construction of the frame itself can be helpful. We’ve even been lucky to see dedications by DIEGO the artist himself.

Keep a lookout like Tom did! Find your own DIEGO art treasures. The DVP has shared several stories over the years of such DIEGO discoveries. And, there are so many more worldwide yet to be found. One was even found this year in #Lithuania!
