THE GENERAL #PATTON CONNECTION TO DIEGO VOCI the #ARTIST

Cheveaux Arabs 230 513-69 For Post 3 DEC 2015

Cheveaux Arabs“1969 by Diego, Oil on Canvas 35″ x 22”

The #New Generation of DiegoVoci™ aficionados continues to build as the #DiegoVoci™ Archive received an image of painting by Diego from a half a century ago. What is the connection to General #Patton?

James, who lives in the U.K., is a proud #New Generation owner of “Cheveaux Arabs” (Arabian #Horses), a Diego painted in 1969. James Cockerill reveals its history:

“It was won at the German American Friendship Ball, chaired by George Smith Patton IV, [a Major General in the United States Army and] the son of famous World War II general, George S. Patton. My mother was working in Major General Patton’s office in the very early 70’s.

At the ball it was the First Prize in a Raffle, which my mother won. It’s been owned by my family ever since. I remember it always hung in the lounge on the wall. We were living in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) which is where I was born.”

The back of the canvas reveals a mystery. Who blacked out the writing and why?  The top one appears to be the signature of “Jawdat” #Naffouj who had an exclusive contract with Diego at that time. It looks like the #painting went back to Diego for some reason – and either Diego or Jawdat was the obliterator. There are others like this. Do you own one?

CAVALIERE BY MASTER ARTIST DIEGOVOCI™

Cavaliere 27.5 x 23.5in  Acrylic on canvas

This unique work of art by Diego titled “Cavaliere” has more than just the stature of a knight; “Cavaliere” has the essence of strength that Diego often portrayed in his paintings whether it be fisherman, laborers, and female nudes.  The majority of Diego’s paintings harnessed a feeling of strength no matter what life looks like.  Diego understood how horses connect with humans and painted horses of all genres… from realism to abstraction.

“Cavaliere”, 1972, was purchased by Walt Lawrence at Diego’s home / studio in Schwetzingen, West Germany.  This painting has been in the Walt Lawrence’s art collection all this time (over 42 years).  This is one of 11 Diego’s Walt Lawrence has in his collection.    Walt recalls Diego as a genuine man who truly liked to invite people into his studio to see the process of his work whether the painting was finished or not.

POTENTIAL #DIEGOVOCI MODEL – KICKING HERSELF

Cheryl McCarra Fairchild and her husband Dan were stationed in Germany from 1974-1977 in the Karlsruhe area. Cheryl remembered to Kami (Diego Voci Project):

“I met Diego for the first time at an OWC (Officer’s Wives Club Luncheon).  I fell in love with Diego’s work and his personality. I wanted to buy an oil painting.  On a Lieutenant’s salary we eventually settled for 3 Diego lithographs which we bought over time from Lillian Dussard.”

“When our family retired to the US in Georgia years later, I started searching online for DIEGO paintings. I found our first oil painting: “Giovene Ragazza”.  The profile reminded me of my mother”.

Giovene Ragazza  44990

Diego’s vibrant and bright colors in the scarves almost contradict the calm serene and fine features of her eyes and lips.

Cheryl recalls;

“Diego actually asked me to model for him.  At the time I had two small children and saw no way to do that. I’m kicking myself now!”

Though Helga Voci, Diego’s widow, states;

“Diego rarely used models, Diego painted from memory.”

Helga was referring to studio models.  Evidence is frequent that out of the studio face to face in the moment, a face of a woman or man, young or old, would inspire Diego.  Example: http://www.artifactcollectors.com/diego-voci-painting-of-the-week-5154118/Page9.html#91027; an interesting story of a black beauty with intriguing eyes.

And stay tuned for more exciting news from the Fairchild’s and the “New Generation”.

HOW DIEGO BECAME DIEGO

Diego Voci, who was known as Diego to his friends, was not known as Diego on his works of art until 1965-66 when Canadian art dealer, Joy Naffouj discovered the essence of who Diego was.  Joy encouraged him to start signing his art “DIEGO”, formerly signed some form of Voci.  For example, the gift to JFK in June 1963 was signed D. Voci.

“Light” is an example of the earliest of that Naffouj / Diego relationship when Joy and Dr. Jawdat Naffouj in Germany became Diego’s exclusive agent.  Dr. Naffouj operates a gallery in Landstuhl, Germany to this day.

Joy Naffouj liked this painting “Light” so well it was put aside for Joy’s own private collection.  See the inscription in her hand upon the back coarse canvas.

DIEGO VOCI EMPATHIZES WITH POOR PEOPLE

Human beings are drawn to emotions in a form of expression that Diego did so well in his portrayal of people on canvas.  Diego empathized with people of lesser means and told their stories with his brushes.  No holding back, Diego captured the raw human face in his works to share the beauty of all walks of life.

The Silvers Family of Colorado shares their “Girl with Pitcher” with the Diego Voci Team, a painting completed during the Joy (Gibson) Naffouj time period.  Joy Naffouj in conversation with Diego one day said “Everyone knows you as Diego… you need to be signing your paintings Diego”.  That was the beginning of the Diego Voci Legacy (1965).

#DIEGO Portrayal of a German #Supper

John and Cindy Silvers were stationed at #Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany from 1965 to 1968. In October of 1966 the Silvers’ acquired two DIEGO’s they presently still own: “Supper” and “Girl with Pitcher.” Joy Gibson-Naffouj in Landstuhl, #Germany represented DIEGO at that time. Shown here is “Supper” (60×80 cm):

SUPPER Nr 1182 60 x 80cm

Supper” (in German “#Abendessen”). The hot main meal of the day in Germany is usually eaten at lunchtime. In the early evening as the last meal of the day one dines on bread with cold cuts and cheese. Wine or hot tea often accompany this typical dinner or “Supper”. In Diego’s rendition of the old man having ‘supper’ one observes the flame indicating it is evening, using the knife to perhaps cut some cheese or meat as his next bite, and a bread roll or “Brötchen” lies next to the plate. The glass of wine and the bottle are part of this old man’s meal. A very typical ‘supper’ in Germany in the day.

John adds, “The frames were made to look old and I don’t know who did that, but we like them. We wouldn’t sell the “Supper,” that will go to our youngest daughter Marni, who did a pencil drawing of it, which was quite good, so she loves the picture.”

An unfortunate health issue put Cindy in the Landstuhl Hospital in Germany – not far from where John worked at Ramstein AFB. She had a stroke at the young age of 29. John explained that Cindy was left with whole right side paralyzed and she couldn’t speak, caused by aphasia. Her right leg came back about 85%; but above the waist, nothing. She was finally able to speak in speech therapy when she sneezed and the therapist quickly said, “What did you say, Cindy?She said, I love you John.” She is quite a fighter and never felt sorry for herself. Cindy raised their four children: John, Lori, Marni and Kevin to adulthood and was an antique dealer in an antique mall.” John retired from the Air Force as a Major in 1972 and then again in 1999 from the Insurance business. business. Cindy and John now reside in Colorado.

John added in a later e-mail to us here at the Diego Voci Project, “Actually, I just recalled that we purchased three paintings. The other was of a Arab man with very dark eyes. The man was just shown as a head and shoulder image. The size of the canvas would be the same and the frame also the same as the two pictured above. When we returned from Germany, a Doctor saw the painting and wanted to have it for his office, so we sold it to him. That’s all I can recall about the third painting.”
